About us

Our mission

BCHAR’s mission is to scale carbon removal by making biochar production accessible, efficient, and impactful. We aim to empower businesses to transform agricultural waste into a valuable tool for carbon removal and soil restoration. Through innovation and automation, we are helping to drive the transition to renewable energy and a sustainable, carbon-neutral future.

Our story

Two men are working to install a device wrapped in aluminum foil inside a shipping container, with a third man watching. The device is a pyrolyzer prototype.

BCHAR was born out of a passion to scale carbon removal and tackle climate change head-on. It all started at ETH Zurich, where our team of students built our first pyrolysis reactor — proof that even homemade setups could have big potential. This project revealed the potential for industrial-scale biochar production. After the incorporation of BCHAR, a pilot project in Thailand followed, showing us that more user-friendly, automated solutions were needed. Since then, we have been refining our tech, expanding our reach, and staying committed to our vision of making a global impact with innovative carbon removal systems.

Our vision

We envision a world where agricultural waste is no longer an environmental burden but a valuable resource for carbon removal and sustainable agriculture. By 2050, we aim to become a global leader in carbon removal, playing a critical role in the transition to a carbon-neutral future. Through continuous innovation in biochar production and automation, we are committed to making scalable carbon removal accessible to industries worldwide, driving both environmental and economic impact.

Our impact

United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 1 - No Poverty logo

We equip organizations with the technology and skills to convert their agricultural waste into biochar, which increases crop yields, contributing to long-term economic stability in farming communities. By facilitating carbon removal credit sales, BCHAR also creates an additional income stream, reducing poverty, fostering economic resilience and building sustainable livelihoods in alignment with the core objectives of SDG 1.

Our biochar solutions increase agricultural resilience and boost water and nutrient retention of soil, thereby improving soil quality. When applied correctly, biochar can also make soils more climate resilient, reduce the need for chemical fertilizers and strengthen farmers’ productivity and food crop stability. Through these mechanisms, BCHAR elevates food security, farmers’ crop income, climate resilience and adaptability of communities worldwide.

BCHAR’s systems transform agricultural waste into biochar, minimizing unsustainable agricultural waste management practices like landfilling and waste burning. This protects soils and water bodies and reduces methane emissions and air pollution. Our solutions allow organizations to create value by converting their agricultural waste into biochar, a valuable material that stores carbon and strengthens soils. We support communities worldwide in achieving sustainable agricultural practices by equipping them with easy-to-use biochar systems and operational training.

We develop industrial-scale biochar systems that remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. By targeting gigaton-scale carbon dioxide removal, BCHAR provides the means for climate change mitigation and adaptation, aligning with global climate change efforts.
